IT Strategy Drives Worthwhile New Year Resolution

As dark January comes to an end, at least in Northern Hemisphere. The New Year’s resolutions begin to stumble and get forgotten. So a good time of year to look at the IT Strategy and revise the resolutions that will take the whole IT Team forward.

Often when we pick resolutions or objectives for ourselves and our team they are about ourselves or our close team. They address challenges or gaps that are holding us back. Have you found that not everything you hope improved when you achieve these objectives? I certainly have. In trying to make things better for my close team, I’ve not truly considered the IT team as a whole. I’ve improved one cog and may now be pushing stresses onto the next.

When we undertake an IT Strategy we consider the IT team as a whole. We look at the connections across teams and relationships between the service offered, the IT assets we manage, the operations of the services, and our ability to change or evolve. Our objective plan is a linked plan across the IT team, whereas we enhance one cog in the machine, we also enhance the connecting cogs to cope with the new strains.

Our IT Strategy objectives can be more fulfilling that our business New Year resolutions for a couple of reasons. Firstly they are more aligned with the whole IT team and therefore more likely to achieve the benefit. Secondly, they are about working together as a wider team, with the team morale and support that brings.

I’ve talked more about how to undertake an IT Strategy in other blog posts at DrJonEA. In my course on Udemy, Developing an IT Strategy, I go through the process step by step.
