ReXP1, my Star‑Wars‑inspired droid, has been one of the most fun builds I’ve ever tackled — but one capability has driven me up the wall: tilt. I’ve wanted the body to move from a lean‑back drive posture to a fully upright stance, and I’ve tried so many mechanisms that just didn’t cut it.
I think I’ve finally cracked it. I’m now using a high‑torque 12V miniature linear actuator — the same kind you’d find opening bus doors or home windows. The real breakthrough was mounting it at the base of the body so the whole frame acts as a lever.
You can see it in action in the video.
Of all the disciplines in robotics, mechanics is the one that challenges me the most. What about you — which part of robot building pushes you the hardest?
